Bats at the Library [95 icons]
Some of us think bats are cute, I was pleased to discover that the man who wrote & illustrated Bats at the Library feels similarly. Mr. Lies makes sure that the proceeds from his web-winged capers go to benefit the real things that go flap in the night, so I encourage you to check out his books as well!

hit counter

First I painstakingly scanned the pages, then reduced each in size, cropped suitable images, played with them in photoshop (while maintaining the integrity of source art and attempting a variety of interesting styles), some are discarded in a final analysis, the chosen are labeled, uploaded to photobucket at a fee per month to keep them available, arranged tastefully into a table, and meticulously organized into a post for sharing. All this followed by massive pimping to inform of their existence.

It is fun, but it's also a lot of work!

Therefore, if you enjoy an icon, it's a very nice way to say "thank you" just by crediting the maker (and/or the original artist). I've admired icon makers since I arrived at LiveJournal, and gotten to know many bloggers through this tiny and free form of artistic manipulation, but specifically wanted to offer a slightly different brand than what is usually available. Rather than ego, it is the hope of making a friend that the request for credit stems from -- for others, as well of myself, in search of those elusive connections.

Thank you.

Please do come back and poke around some too. ;)

And a pleasure as always to do business with you.

See, that's another thing I like about making graphics, it happens to be a nifty way to expose people to new and/or favorite things that might interest them!

Awww! These are so so adorable. 42 and 44 are my favourites, I will definately be sure to credit if I ever use them. :3

I rather like those illustrations too, bats swimming through the inky sky in their unique way.

Thanks so much for the specific feedback!

Thank you so much!

I had no idea that bats had come to require protecting until this book! D:

How anyone couldn't find them cute instead of scary I couldn't fathom, but this book should go far for their personal relations, and further...they eat bugs! They're really useful creatures overall and bother nearly no one at all.

Thank you so much for taking a look and the major compliment.

I thought I was the only one who did things like collect entire icon sets!

This book is about the cutest thing in the world. I worked at a bookstore, and I was always randomly flipping through it even when I wasn't supposed to be in the kids department. The icons are wonderful!
☆: Bats (lamp)theidolhands on March 26th, 2010 02:09 pm (UTC)
I too found myself in the children's section and felt foolish for a moment, a book so wonderful hardly seems like it should be limited to the younger populace. xD

Thank you for saying so as well as sharing the memory! Clearly Mr. Lies has a talent for spurring on passion through his work!

awwwww, baby bats :')
I wish I knew what #16 said in the bubble.

Thank you for making these. I'm not sure which ones I'll take yet, but I'll definitely credit you.

"No more melted cheese for me, no"
Ask and you shall receive. I believe it is a reference to Bed Knobs and Broomsticks.

I know, they're so teeny!! <3
I'm still trying to figure out the floaters, though...

Hi, thanks for the icons.
When I was little I use to watch every evening the bats flying at the sundown. It was so beautiful!, they did it to catch the bugs at that hour. But then came an exterminator plane to finish that spectacle in order to stop another bug plague. The plane exterminate not only the plague.... also exterminate the little bats. So sad and blind.
☆: Bats (lamp)theidolhands on March 26th, 2010 11:34 pm (UTC)
Oh, so that is probably how some of them are getting harmed.

In my neighborhood too, I have fond memories of seeing and hearing bats at sunset.

It is sad, of course normally bats can only see in the smallest of light and rely on radar to get about (seeing the world in actually far more detail that way), I can't help be charmed by the notion of them reading books. I hope such work and spreading the "word" can help to alleviate such crimes committed by humanity.

I am definitely going to have to check this book out, what a fabulous idea, bats with books XD

I think I may have to increase my icon limit! :s I flew away into the night with 1, 5, 40, 42, 64, 69 & 87 (Is 64 a reference to Little Red Riding (Bat) Hood?)

My mum had a bat when she was little, I can't remember what she said happened to it in the end but she didn't have it for long! They're fabulous creatures, amazing how many people are frightened of them really!

Thanks you :)
☆: Astrotheidolhands on March 26th, 2010 11:42 pm (UTC)
It is a reference to Little Red Riding Hood, and there is one to Winnie the Pooh as well! Another cites Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, I believe. There were many stories that the bats were imagining themselves in (like Alice in Wonderland).

I'd enjoy hearing more about this kept bat, if you don't mind bugging her for the story.

They are fabulous creatures, it would make me miffed to hear them being besmirched, even the "vampire" variety isn't very harmful or dangerous. And of course there is the aptly named "fruit bat" who has the face of a fox (and is about the size of a cat). My mother kept saying she doesn't like the "ugly" ones, but then I explained that their faces are designed to be concave to allow them to be living satellite dishes, and she got a look of complete recognition on her face, like "Oohhh!"

Love these! I think 44, 45, 85, and 90 are my favorites. Taking them for future use!

Bats are cute. I've had a couple instances of them getting into homes I was living in or associated with at the time, and one time a cat unfortunately got to one of them. My mom had heard that they needed to be tested for rabies if found in a home, so she saved it in a coffee can in the freezer. I opened it up once to get a closer look at it--it was so tiny!
☆: Bats (lamp)theidolhands on March 27th, 2010 08:52 am (UTC)
I'm so glad to see many people on my f-list enjoying them!

A cat managed to get a bat? That's fairly impressive and I'll resist making a DC reference (sort of). Although less than .05% of the bat populace is subject to rabies, it's true that they say that, as after all bats are part of the rodent family. One is supposed to do that immediately though, how long did she keep the poor thing on ice?

Despite frequent unease about the animals, they are generally very small, truly fitting the german word that translates to: "flying mouse".
